This is a sharp, clear FLUORITE with SIDERITE specimen from a little-known and long-closed locality - the old Boltsburn Mine, Rookhope, Weardale, Co., Durham, England. I acquired this specimen out of the collection of the Greenfield Community College when they were divesting all of their oversize specimens due to space constraints. The amazing things about this locality is that the mine closed down in 1932!

The Boltsburn Mine is located in the village of Rookhope, where the Boltsburn and Red Veins intersect; it worked the Boltsburn Vein to the northeast. Originally developed for lead ore, it was bought out in the early 1800s by the Beaumont Company, who met with little success. In 1892, the Weardale Lead Company, purchased the mine, and it was they who found the heavily mineralized flats the mine is best known for. The main shaft was more than 3 km long, and the dip of the strata necessitated new, deeper shafts and levels. In 1932, the mine closed because of labor problems and due to the prohibitive cost of transporting the ore.
