Here is a fabulous specimen of beautiful red orange MIMETITE from the Pingtouling Mine, Sanjiang, Lianan, Guangdong, China. Mimetite is a minor ore of lead, and in this case the mineral is colored a nice rich reddish orange color, and the crystals are sharply terminated. I acquired this fine specimen at the Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show from a Chinese wholesale dealer who went to business school the same year I did. This locality was written up in an issue of Rocks & Minerals magazine. The excellent article gave some sad news: no new material has come out of the mine since 2003, and the miners say they have worked out the oxidized zone that produced the crystallized mimetite.
