Here is a specimen of CYANOTRICHITE, a rare oxidation zone copper mineral from the copper mine in Qing Long, Gui Zhou, China. When they first came out around 2005, specimens from this mine set a new standard for this uncommon mineral. The name comes from the Greek kyanos and thrix, meaning "blue" and "hair", referring to the eye-popping electric blue color and the trademark tufted, hair-like habit. I acquired this select specimen from one the Chinese wholesale suppliers who set up at the Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show. His specimens were from a late 2010 find in a quality that rivals the best ever found at Qing Long.
